Safety Month

National Safety Month – Job Safety, PPE, Mechanical Aids and Tools

We have come a long way when it comes to job safety and protecting our employees since the iconic photo “Lunch atop a Skyscraper” was taken on September 20, 1932.  Eleven ironworkers sitting on a steel beam 850 feet above the ground on the sixty-ninth floor of the RCA Building in Manhattan.  As a matter of fact, employers can get huge fines now for not following safety procedures.  What can you do to protect yourself on the job?

Wear Proper Equipment

There is a much greater risk of injuries if you do not wear the proper PPE at a construction site.  Depending on the job you are performing, appropriate PPE and safety equipment that will suit the task will protect you. Inform yourself of what you need when it comes to the proper PPE and wear it!

Use Mechanical Aids

Instead of attempting to lift or carry heavy objects, use a conveyor belt, wheelbarrow, or other mechanical aid to help you move it. If something is too heavy, let a supervisor know you need assistance, but never attempt to move something heavy enough to cause injury.

Inspect Tools

Make sure the tools you use are functioning properly and that you are using the right tool for the right job.

If you don’t know something – ASK!  Think before you act!
